Practical information

Every country has their own set of rules and some of them are nice to know for guests before arrival. We have collected some practical information based on useful knowledge and frequently asked questions.

Traffic information:

In Denmark you must always use your seat belt and the dimmed headlights must be on – even during the day.

You can only use your cellphone while driving if your phone has a head-set or has been installed so you can talk without using your hands.

When parking in towns, remember to set your parking disc on time of arrival and notice the timelimits for parking (Sign under the P-sign: Timer (t) = hours). A parking ticket is minimum DKK 510. Foreign parking discs are excepted. You can collect a parking disc in the tourist office. Most places you are only allowed to park for two hours, although some places allow free parking all day. You only have to pay for parking at Borgen. View parking lots on the map.

Remember, if you travel to Germany you must bring your passport, which is the only valid ID.

Regarding animals:

If you are bringing dogs, cats and ferrets over the border they must have a readable tattoo or be marked with a chip and a passport with a statement from a veterinarian that a vaccination against rabies has been performed. Animals that do not have the required papers will be put in quarantine for six weeks at the expense of the owner. In Germany, domestic animals must be brought into the country as cargo that has been strapped in, sit in a transport box or be safe behind bars. The fine is minimum 35 euros. Read more about a holiday with your dog here.

Lost or found animals must be reported to the police on the number 114.

Phone the animal ambulance at 1812 if you have come across a sick or injured animal, if you see a dog in a parked car on a hot summer’s day, if you find a box with guinea pigs left behind at a lay-by, etc. Run-over animals: Contact the animal ambulance and mark the location if the animal has run away.
Some distributers, firm numbers and foreign numbers are blocked and not able to dial 1812, in this case you might try to burrow a phone or if it is during office hours at the union „Dyrenes Beskyttelse“ dial 33 28 70 00 and choose 1.

In case of emergency:

If you need an ambulance, fire-fighters or sea rescuing, call 112. In case of accidents, acute illness and other life-threatening situations, calling from a phone box is free. The call will be received at the operation control centre in Esbjerg, and it is an advantage if you can give precise information about your location.

If you need the police, dial 114. You can also contact the local police in Sønderborg at Ringridervej 37.

If you are in need of an urgent care clinic or emergency room, you need to call them first at +45 70 11 07 07 before giving them a visit - also in the middle of the night. Read more HERE.
