The three largest attractions in the Sønderborg area are The Experience Park Universe, Historic Battlefield Center Dybbøl Banke and Sønderborg Castle. The first two attractions can be visited both when the sun is shining and when the weather is a bit gray and both have lots of exciting activities, while the castle is ideal for curious children on rainy days.
If tilting-of-the-run is entirely new to you, you need to visit the historical tilting-of-the-ring course. Every Tuesday during the summer season you can see the contestants in action, hear about the tilting-of-the-ring's history and see the historical costumes and maybe pet a horse. If the sun is shining, you need to visit the beautiful South Jutland nature. What about going crab fishing? You simply tie a string to a stick on one end and fix the other on a clothes-peg. Attach a crushed clam to the peg and throw out your bait near some seaweed. And now you just have to wait until a crab is on your hook!
The pirate Alf allegedly lived in the Gråsten Forests in the 12th century. Many have during the years looked for his buried treasure in the area, but no-one has found it yet. Bring your entire family on a treasure hunt and hear the legend about the pirate. You can also go treasure hunting elsewhere in South Jutland with geocaching.

If you like animals and mini-golfing, you'll love to visit the coatis and other animals at Danhostel Sønderborg-Vollerup. When paying the entry fee of DKK 30,- you can use all the facilities on the hostel's big playground. Also Fun Bowling offers mini-golfing and bowling for the entire family. Or maybe you should play a game of soccer golf - an activity, which the whole family will enjoy.
Horse-drawn carriage rides in Gråsten forest is for both children and adults, where you can enjoy the nature on a different sort of picnic. Otherwise you might enjoy horse-back ride, for example with Horse rental Als. If you're more into speed, you might like to try go-karts near Asserballe.
Indoor activities go really well with bad weather and rainy days.
If you're the creative type, a visit to the Paper Museum in Gråsten or Stolbroladen in Svenstrup will give you plenty of inspiration to your own creations. You can also visit Lys i Laden in Nordborg, where you can make your own candles.
If you have teenagers with you on holiday the Escape House in Sønderborg is a must. Here you will need to escape the locked room by solving riddles and finding clues.
